Peeling Pomegranates (2000)

After a serious motorbike accident, in which I left a small part of my left leg on a mountain pass, I was hospitalised in Hanoi. Painkillers, anaesthetics, antibiotics took their toll, leaving me permanently numb and without sensation. Physically, I couldn't move. Mentally, I was climbing the walls.

I juxtapose rich, lurid colours in arbitrary sweeps across metre square canvas. I dredge images from the crash, the hospital, my fear. I define them, through abstraction, allowing my subconscious free reign. There is no rule. Just a need to control the pain from within.

I could see my bone. All I could think was,
I can see inside my leg.
Is that really the inside of my leg?
